Olympic Legend of the Day: Sally Gunnell

Growing up Sally Gunnell was a big deal. Like Linford Christie and Torvell and Dean she was one of the superstar Olympians of my childhood. At school any girls good at sport were always likened to Sally Gunnell regardless of but it’s only recently I learnt what a true legend Sally is.

Sally Gunnell celebrating at Bacelona '92

She’s won 24 medals across all competitions, 16 of them gold, a feat in itself which is truly staggering. Her greatest Olympic moments came at Barcelona '92 where she picked up bronze in the 4x400 relay and an individual gold in the 400m hurdles. Her sporting achievements were rewarded with an MBE in 1993 followed by an OBE in 1998.

I don’t know about you, but I for one think we’ve missed her from the commentary box in these Olympics. Where is she? Come back Sally, you’re the Olympic legend from my childhood and we miss you!
