Nicola Adams with the first ever Olympic gold medal for women's boxing around her neck

Oh how we love a young woman who literally smashes through an anachronistic gender boundary and does so with a massive grin on her face. Watched by the Duchess of Cambridge, Nicola Adams beat her Chinese opponent Ren Cancan (the double world champion no less) 16-7 in the flyweight division and became the first woman in history to take an Olympic gold medal in boxing.

Some had expressed reservations about the introduction of women’s boxing as a discipline in the London 2012 Games, but Nicola’s fleet feet and dexterity proved that she and her fellow competitors were more than capable of competing with grace, skill and an appetite for victory equal to that of their male counterparts.

Immediately after her massive win, Nicola attributed her success to ‘lots of Yorkshire puddings’ and said she was planning on celebrating with a trip to Nando’s. Her path to success echoes many of her fellow Team GB sportsmen and women – she’s battled injuries and lack of funding (she worked on a building site and as an extra in Coronation Street to fund herself) but she never gave up.

Nicola has vowed to defend her title in Rio in 2016 and her exploits and dedication will surely encourage countless girls and women to put on a pair of boxing gloves and step into the ring.
