She was awarded a bronze medal in the 800m back in Sydney in 2000, but 2004 was to be the year Kelly Holmes became a household name. She bettered her previous achievements by winning gold in both the 1500 and 800m in Athens.

Growing up Sally Gunnell was a big deal. Like Linford Christie and Torvell and Dean she was one of the superstar Olympians of my childhood. At school any girls good at sport were always likened to Sally Gunnell regardless of but it’s only recently I learnt what a true legend Sally is.

She battled her way to win Team GB’s first ever gold medal in taekwondo and at just 19 Jade Jones is our youngest medallist in these games. In our book that makes her pretty cool.
