This week’s style hero: Giovanna Battaglia

It takes confidence to carry off such a jazzy accessory and Giovanna has it in spades – plus a sense of humour which prevents her from ever straying into po-faced fashion territory.

Beautiful woman + beautiful dress does not always necessarily = style icon as far as I’m concerned; there are many stunning models and actresses who look like their clothes are wearing them, rather than the other way around. But when that woman is Giovanna Battaglia it’s a pleasure to watch her put her exemplary styling skills to work in creating a stunning, always surprising ensemble.

In the midst of New York Fashion Week former French Vogue editor Carine Roitfeld launched her latest project, called CR Fashion Book, and her stylish pals got seriously dressed up to mark the occasion at the Frick Collection. The guests were unapologetically glamorous and Giovanna was amongst the most elegant – while still looking like she was having fun with her get-up.

A slinky floor-length gown with a swirling, baroque pattern in black velvet on a daringly sheer background was subtly sexy – especially with that plunging back which she took every opportunity to show off via coquettish over-the-shoulder poses. But the green satin headband was the highlight of her outfit for me – unexpected, chic and playful, it lifted her look above those of her fellow partygoers. It takes confidence to carry off such a jazzy accessory and Giovanna has it in spades – plus a sense of humour which prevents her from ever straying into po-faced fashion territory.
