Favourite Summer Style Combination: Blue And White

I love the crisp contrast that you get between blue and white which looks so effective on willow pattern plates, Wedgewood china and French toile de jouy fabric.

For me, no two colours worn together evoke summer more effectively than blue and white. That combination makes me think of the chalky plaster houses on Mykonos that dazzle so blindingly against the turquoise sea, of cotton wool clouds scudding across a blazing blue sky, of nautical costumes, all navy trim against snowy, starched linen and of cool seersucker striped suits worn while sipping sundowners in the Hamptons.

I love the crisp contrast that you get between blue and white which looks so effective on willow pattern plates, Wedgewood china and French toile de jouy fabric. Blue is the most versatile and flattering of all colours – there's a shade to suit every taste and temperament, from vibrant turquoise to ice-blue, inky indigo, pastel blue, navy...

When it’s hot I want to wear nothing but cool white cotton with contrasting china blue embellishment – a striped shirt and shorts and sandals, a linen shift dress with espadrilles – and the odd bit of colourful jewellery to add a touch of the exotic. So in that spirit, I’ve rounded up my favourite blue and white pieces from the high street and the designer SALES which are on right now!

This Erdem top is so beautiful, it looks like a piece of porcelain you'd find in a stately home. Imagine it with a white pleated skirt and flat leather sandals.

And this lovely shirt from Hobbs is a real statement - if you were going to a chic city wedding it would look amazing with the sleeves rolled up, tucked into a pencil skirt, with super high heels.

My top two places for picking up casually chic blue and white stuff on the high street are the Gap and Uniqlo. They both have SO much STUFF it was a struggle to narrow it down for this edit. Stripy tees are an easy option for summer – buy oversized and wear loosely tucked into shorts or cropped trousers.

And because it always gets a bit chilly in the evenings, even when you're on holiday, wrap up in a richly patterned scarf.

I would feel like an old fashioned sailor on the high seas in these jazzy Uniqlo trews and I firmly believe that's a Very Good Thing.

I've got the earrings to match this divine willow pattern necklace from good ol' Tatty Devine.

I believe these bracelets are in the men's section at River Island but that wouldn't stop me wearing them.

And you didn't seriously expect me to do an edit of blue and white fashion without including one Breton top, could you?
